AFL legend Wayne Carey quietly erased from history as controversy erupts: ‘This is embarrassing!’

  • Wayne Carey is not featured in the North Melbourne history clip
  • AFL legend is arguably the best to play for the club
  • Players and footy fans are outraged by the oversight

Controversial North Melbourne great Wayne Carey has been sensationally erased from history in a recent video released by the football club celebrating its upcoming 100th year in the competition.

The former Kangaroos forward, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, was left out of a video shared by the club on Friday.

The music video showed the club’s history and a centenary special to be used in round 20.

Carey’s ex-teammate Corey McKernan has called out the club for overlooking Carey.

McKernan told

In another post he wrote: ‘Explain how it happens? If the excuse is ‘oh, it’s a young boy who did it and he didn’t know it’ then please spare me’.

In yet another tweet he wrote: “Can North Melbourne answer why you would leave out Wayne Carey for a football related video for such an occasion?”

Collingwood legend Mick McGuane also wanted answers about why Carey was absent.

McGuane wrote: ‘I love the concept and innovation in North Melbourne, but if it’s a ‘real’ party you can overlook your biggest ever player in the vision to promote it.’

Footy fans are also excited about the fact that ‘The King’ does not appear in the clip.

“I have sent the club an email expressing my disgust,” one X user posted.

‘This is embarrassing! How can you not have Wayne Carey in your video? Ridiculous,” another replied.

“Where’s Wayne Carey… your best player ever?” said a third.

Carey is accused of shocking behavior towards women during and after his playing career.

Carey came to a controversial end to his time with the North Melbourne Kangaroos and has since often been in the news for the wrong reasons.

In 1996, Carey admitted indecently assaulting a woman on a Melbourne street by grabbing her breast. The case was settled out of court.

Despite this, Carey led North Melbourne to an AFL grand final victory over Sydney that same year, playing 271 career games.

In 2007, Carey was arrested in the United States for allegedly breaking a wine glass in his fiancée Kate Neilson’s face.

Neilson did not press charges, but said she was “bleeding profusely from the mouth.”

Carey later pleaded guilty to two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer for resisting police after the incident.

In 2008, police used capsicum spray to subdue Carey after he attacked officers in Port Melbourne.

In 2022, Carey was let go by Channel 7 following a ‘white powder scandal’ at a casino.
