French international Adrien Rabiot is set to return to Ligue 1 with Marseille.

Rabiot has been a free agent since his contract with Serie A giants Juventus expired last summer.

In July it was reported that Manchester United were planning to hold talks with the midfielder, but ultimately pulled out of the race to secure his signature.

The Frenchman is now set to leave for Marseille, “subject to the results of a medical examination”, the Ligue 1 club confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

Rabiot could make his debut when second-place Marseille travel to rivals Lyon on Sunday evening.

And Lyon manager Pierre Sage joked that the timing of Rabiot’s return to Ligue 1 could have been better.

“I would have preferred him to come to Ligue 1 a week later,” Sage said after the stalemate between his team and Lens.

Rabiot has indicated that he does not expect the Marseille transfer to progress beyond initial negotiations.

“At first it seemed unlikely, but after a lot of talking with Medhi, we reached an agreement,” the 29-year-old said in an interview with BFM.

‘I also spoke to the coach. The project really appealed to me. A city that lives for football, that makes you want to play and win.’

Rabiot played five of France’s six matches at Euro 2024, missing only the quarter-final against Portugal through suspension.

The midfielder came through PSG’s youth academy and went on to make 227 appearances for the club in all competitions.

In 2019, he decided to move to Serie A with Juventus and at the end of his debut season he managed to win the league title.

Rabiot becomes the latest addition to Marseille’s squad, which also includes Mason Greenwood, Neal Maupay and Emile Hojbjerg under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.
