They were among about 100 filmmakers, artists and pro-democracy activists who joined the flash mob, which took place prior to the gala screening of Maestro on Saturday.
The group carried placards with portraits of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, whose death in police custody last September after being arrested for not wearing her veil correctly sparked the protests.
There were also banners showing that director Roustayi, who came forward last month, had been sentenced to six months in prison on charges of “anti-regime propaganda activities” for the 2022 screening of the family drama in Cannes.
The arrests are believed to be part of a crackdown on Iran’s Islamic Republic regime, which is seeking to suppress dissent ahead of the first anniversary of Amini’s death on Sept. 16.
Earlier in the day, Nattiv and Ebrahimi’s groundbreaking collaboration – the first film to co-direct an Israeli and an Iranian filmmaker – had its world premiere at Venice’s Orizzonti section.
It tells the story of a young female judoka who faces a life-changing decision during the World Championship when the Iranian authorities want her to withdraw from the competition.

The film revolves around a rehearsal of an Iranian theater company in Tehran for a performance of Aristophanes’ Greek comedy Lisistrata.

It comes after the Venice Film Festival kicked off its 80th edition this week, and the festival has a lot in store for its guests, as Saturdays will see events such as Giorgio Armani’s ‘One Night Only’ haute couture party. The spectacular amFAR Venezia gala will take place on Sunday.
