The Australian sports community has gathered around a devastated Super Netball star who lost everything in a house fire at his home in Jamaica.

Adelaide Thunderbirds goal defense Latanya Wilson’s childhood home was among many destroyed in a suspected early morning arson attack in the city of Kingston on Thursday, leaving dozens homeless.

Her Commonwealth Games silver medal and her Super Netball premiership medal won with the Thunderbirds this season were among the assets destroyed.

The champion was sleeping at the time and was forced to flee her burning house.

Wilson remains shaken by the incident, but told a Jamaican TV station she is relieved she and her sister escaped unharmed.

“I think the most important lesson in this is to be thankful for life because one minute you can be on top of everything and the next minute you can lose everything in no time at all,” Wilson said.

“I guess I’m just thankful that I have life and that everything I lost in the fire can actually be repaired. Jamaica can actually help me get (the medals) back.’

Wilson was asleep when she called the neighbors ‘fire!’ heard calling.

“By the time I got up… the fire was at the back of the house. I just put something on and as I went out I remember my sister saying to me, “Don’t forget my laptop,” she recalled.

“That was the only thing I could actually grab, along with my bag.”

Thunderbirds teammate Eleanor Cardwell and Netball Jamaica have launched an appeal to raise money to help Wilson and her family rebuild their lives.
