Firefighters have come to the aid of a toddler who got his head stuck in a potty lid while his mum was taking a nap.

Wyatt Taylor, 1, was supposed to be sleeping next to mum Courtney Taylor on Thursday in a north Adelaide home.

But he pulled down a potty seat that was on his grandmother’s wall unit and put it over his head.

After Ms Taylor awoke, she saw the strife he had got himself into and rang emergency after being unable to get it off, or get help nearby.

Ms Taylor told Daily Mail Australia: ‘[I was] definitely freaked out but I just made sure I kept him calm until helped arrived.’

Wyatt’s grandmother, Donna Taylor and the mum tried to see if the potty lid would come off his head but it made him very uncomfortable and he cried.

‘I tried to see how far it would go but once I knew it was completely stuck on his head I didn’t try anymore until help arrived,’ Ms Taylor said. ‘I didn’t want to pry it off him as he was distressed enough.’

It wasn’t causing the boy pain to keep the lid on but the family tried to find tools to take the lid apart.

‘Unfortunately we are moving and a lot of stuff went into storage – we had packed our screwdrivers,’ Ms Taylor said.

They knocked on neighbour’s doors but when no one answered they called triple-0 – while they waited the boy fell asleep with the lid attached.

The fire truck arrived with sirens blaring and lights flashing as the emergency workers thought the child had his head stuck in a proper toilet.

The emergency service crew saw the funny side of it and soon unscrewed the lid to set Wyatt free.

Once it was off, it was the toddler’s turn for a big nap.

‘Kids definitely keep you on your feet that’s for sure,’ the mum said. ‘It was definitely embarrassing but a laugh, and something I’ll never let him forget.’
