Debbie thought she was buying a $550 TV on Facebook Marketplace. But when she opened the box it came in, she got a very nasty surprise

A woman has been scammed into paying hundreds of dollars for a box full of books, sugar and kitty litter that she thought contained a TV.

Debbie, from Craigmore in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, agreed to pay a man $550 for a TV she saw advertised on Facebook Marketplace on Tuesday.

A security camera in her garage caught the man pulling up in a red Ford Escape at 11:30 a.m. to personally deliver the alleged 65-inch TV to her front door.

Debbie opened the box to find Styrofoam protecting 20 liters of kitty litter, a bag of sugar, Ganglife Australia and Stealth Garden books, and a hammer with a pink handle inside.

By the time she realized she had been scammed, the man was long gone.

After reporting the scam to the police, others in the area came out claiming that the same man had also duped them with similar scams.

Debbie claimed the man told her he had won the TV in a lottery, but he didn’t want it.

South Australian police are now investigating the incident and looking for clues that could lead them to the scammer, who has since deleted his Facebook profile.
