Adelaide couple ditch rental home to live on a boat with dolphin neighbours at North Haven Marina

A couple’s attempt to beat the insanity of the rental market by living on a BOAT for a fraction of the cost of the house, and their only neighbors are dolphins

  • An Adelaide couple abandon their rental home for a boat as they save for a house deposit
  • Phoebe Kempson and Brad Crane pay $400 a month, much less than their previous rent
  • The views and the dolphins make up for the scams and sacrifices, like selling possessions.

A young Australian couple have handed over the keys to their rental home only to wake up to stunning views and dolphins as their neighbours.

Phoebe Kempson, 25, and Brad Crane, 27, have moved from their Adelaide home onto a boat docked at North Haven Marina.

After purchasing the 45-foot vessel they named the Shark for $59,000, the couple pays just $400 a month for mooring and $50 a quarter for electricity.

They admitted that they were still adjusting to life on a ship and had to sell most of their possessions, including all their furniture.

The plan is to spend several years on the boat while saving for the deposit on the house.

Brad Crane and Phoebe Kempson don’t regret trading their rental house for a boat

“Right now we’re also paying off our loan on the boat, so it’s probably the same as living in a rental,” Ms Kempson told the abc.

“But at least at the end of this we’re going to be able to keep the boat and it’s ours instead of spending money on a lease.”

Your backyard and daily visits from your lovely neighbors make up for the downsides, like going to a laundromat to do your laundry.

“I was cooking breakfast the other day and a dolphin appears right in front of my face, about two meters away, you don’t see that in the other marinas that are closed,” said Ms Kempson.

“It’s really beautiful to wake up to the natural sun, come out and it’s the ocean, it’s just stunning.”

Ms Kempson and her husband are documenting their adventures on the Tales of Tiburon Instagram page.

“There’s still a lot to decorate, rearrange and renovate, but that’s half the fun,” he captioned the photos inside the ship.

The most daunting challenge for the novice sailors was navigating the ship home from Port Fairy in Victoria.

Phoebe and Brad plan to live on the boat for several years while saving for a deposit on the house.

The couple suffered seasickness as Crane broke his ribs after being thrown over the ship during a night of rough seas.

“Phoebe spent the first two hours crying on and off, we both took turns throwing up for five hours, 4m swell and 18 knots is scary,” the couple wrote at the time.

Adelaide rents rose 12 per cent in the 12 months to September 2022, according to the latest report from PropTrack.

It was the largest rent increase on record in the South Australian capital.

Phoebe and Brad traveled to Port Fairy to bring their ship Tiburon back to Adelaide.
