Adam Sandler takes on serious role as a Czech astronaut who discovers a talking spider in first teaser for Netflix’s Spaceman

On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled the first teaser for Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler as Czech astronaut Jakub Procházka, who discovers a talking giant alien spider named Hanuš, which may or may not be imaginary.

“Just like you, I fled from my planet,” Hanuš – voiced by Paul Dano – tells Jakub in a forest during the 20 second example.

'Through galaxies, through black holes, through time. And then I found… you.”

The mysterious ancient creature becomes Procházka's unlikely companion in the science fiction film, and the two “form an intense and emotional bond” during philosophical conversations.

The 57-year-old comedian's orphan character regrets leaving his devoted wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) to embark on the dangerous solo mission to Venus, and he clashes with secret Russian rivals.

Adam wrapped Johan Renck's $40 million budget adventure drama back in July 2021, but due to the impact of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, it won't premiere on the streaming giant until March 1.

The R-rated film – based on Jaroslav Kalfař's 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia – is produced by Channing Tatum and also stars Isabella Rossellini, Kunal Nayyar, Sinead Phelps, John Flanders and Petr Papánek as the younger Jakub.

Sandler previously cut his dramatic teeth in films like Josh and Benny Safdie's 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems and Paul Thomas Anderson's absurdist 2002 romcom Punch Drunk Love.

Spaceman doesn't seem disconnected from the Mark Twain Prize winner's lucrative activities A $250 million deal with Netflix as he already produced and starred in ten films for them between 2015 and 2023, which were viewed more than two billion times.

Adam's latest release – the animated film Leo – scored the biggest debut for a Netflix animated film with 34.6 million views when it premiered on November 21.

“I love working with Netflix and collaborating with them,” Sandler said in a 2017 statement.

“I love how passionate they are about making films and getting them out there for the whole world to see. They have made me feel like family and I can't thank them enough for their support.”

The winner of the Independent Spirit Award founded his production company Happy Madison Productions back in 1999.
