Adam Peaty admitted to feeling “pure anger” after winning just bronze in the 100m breaststroke at the short course world event in Melbourne.

Making his first outing since the Commonwealth Games, the 27-year-old Briton was third behind American Nic Fink and Italian Nicolo Martinenghi.

He said: ‘I’m angry with the bronze. I don’t get bronze often, so it’s a bit weird on Wikipedia. It’s my first competition since the Olympics. The Commonwealth was just a test really, after my foot (injury)’.

The 27-year-old was running second behind Fink but was overtaken by Martinenghi in the final length and secured the first medal of the meet for the Brits.

I’m disappointed, but I won’t let myself. It is what it is. I am what I am. I’m looking forward to a long field season after this week and I have to be uncomfortable,’ she added.

‘I have to be challenged, if I’m going to challenge that world record. This is the fight I need and I feel pure anger, which is when I feel very dangerous.
