Adam Hills Shares Surprising Reason Why He Put His Stand-Up Comedy Career ‘On Hold’ And ‘Turned Down Huge Gigs’

Adam Hills puts his comedy aside to work on his rugby charity.

The Australian funnyman, 53, who was born without a right foot, started a charity team for the Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) in Cheshire, England.

Taking the focus away from his comedy, Adam is now ready to fulfill his dream of playing in the first-ever PDRL World Cup, which is documented in Adam Hills: Grow Another Foot, airing this month on Channel 4.

“When I was a kid, the idea of playing in a Rugby League World Cup was next to impossible. Now I’m really going to get my chance,” Adam says in the documentary, as reported by The sun.

‘I don’t know how I became Mr. Rugby League! I put my comedic career on hold. I reject mass performances because it’s on training nights. Everyone around me can see how obsessed I am with it.

The star presents on Rugby League coverage for Channel 4. He also trains weekly with his team in Warrington, Cheshire.

Adam plays for England instead of Australia, which he calls a ‘Sophie’s Choice’ in the documentary.

The comedian said it wasn’t about winning the World Cup, it was about getting people to play in it.

Adam describes PDRL as ‘fast, relentless and borderline unhinged’ as he sustains a number of injuries.

“I’ve been knocked out, broken my ankle and suffered ligament damage, torn my hamstring, apparently I have a compression fracture in one of my discs and it could be early onset osteoporosis,” he explained.

Adam added that at one point he was told to relax rugby league.

“There’s really a little part of me that thinks, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?'” It’s a stubbornness that comes from having a disability. I’m like, “I can still have one.”
