The post, written on Sam’s behalf by his assistant, Lauren, said the scammers were posing as Sam and contacting fans via social media.

This is not possible, the publication explains, because the star does not have a private account and “does not keep secrets” from her social media team.

“Sam asked me to post here to give his followers an idea of the number of fake Sam Neill Instagram accounts,” he said.

“The ONLY actual Sam Neill account is this one, with the blue verified tick,” the post continued.

He won’t try to ship you a diamond ring from Sri Lanka (for which you will later have to pay customs duties). That’s a scammer again! Sam’s post warned.

Meanwhile, it seems some of the star’s fans didn’t want to take Sam’s warning too seriously, and some of his 530,000 followers were eager to take the mickey.

Who the hell have I been sending all those nudes to? replied a male fan.

‘Wait, you mean the message he sent me asking me to send him bitcoins to be in a Jurassic Park movie wasn’t real?’ said another, before adding: ‘Well, this is awkward!’

Other fans welcomed Sam’s warning.

Please continue to report fake accounts that contact you,” commented one follower. “It helps a lot and will continue to make Instagram a safer place for everyone.”
