Terrifying footage has captured a 42-vehicle collision that left one person dead and 39 injured as a dust storm tore through a motorway in Hungary.

Five trucks and 37 cars were inadvertently trapped in a horrific collision on the M1 motorway near the town of Herceghalom on March 11.

Local media reports claim that a 44-year-old man who was found dead amid the rubble was not discovered until the next morning.

Among the 39 injured were 10 children, while 19 vehicles were destroyed beyond repair. Two victims are reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries, while 12 others are in serious condition.

The massive collision on the motorway took place 26 kilometers from the Hungarian capital, Budapest, at around 2:25 p.m. on Saturday.

Dashcam footage captured the moment the vehicles collided on an extreme highway.

Images at the scene show the impact of the horrific accident, with several cars completely destroyed.

Around 19 vehicles were destroyed beyond repair, with broken windows and shattered metal parts.

The gruesome footage from the dash cam shows a helpless driver, affected by poor visibility, swerving into the center lane before colliding with a car in front at some speed, setting off a horrific chain of events.

Shrapnel and other parts of the vehicles can be seen exploding as the cars continue to crash into each other.

More footage from the scene shows the scale of the freeway crash with several vehicles completely charred inside and out.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the unrecognizable vehicles as rescuers descended on the scene.

Some cars had visibly piled on top of others during the shocking collision, with windows smashed and metal structures completely shattered.

Four helicopters and 16 ambulances arrived on the scene as they desperately tried to recover those involved in the crash.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene in a desperate attempt to put out the fires and save the victims.

The Hungarian company Concession Infrastructure Development Plc., which operates and maintains the highways, attributed the massive collision to a localized dust storm.

The vehicles appeared unrecognizable after the crash caused cars and trucks to catch fire on the highway.
