Five people killed in shooting at popular Mexican resort city just days after 10 bodies were found on the streets

Five people were killed and another injured at a supermarket in the resort town of Acapulco on Thursday.

The gunmen arrived at Dalia’s handicraft market around 5:30 p.m. and opened fire.

Four men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene and one man was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

The Guerrero state attorney general’s office said in a statement that it is investigating the shooting.

No arrests had been reported as of Friday morning.

In a separate incident Thursday, the bodies of four young men were found dead on a football field, while two others were found near a high school. All six victims died from gunshots.

The killings followed Monday’s gruesome discovery of 10 bodies left on the streets of Acapulco.

Six bodies were found scattered along a lane near a market after being dumped from a vehicle on Monday evening, according to local media reports.

A gun battle near Emiliano Zapata left three people dead, while another person was found dead in the seaside resort.

At least 598 homicides were recorded in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero in the first four months of 2024, an average of 3.6 per day, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

The state, which has been hit by warring drug cartels, had 1,890 murders in 2023.

Guerrero’s crime states recorded at least 68 murders in May, including 24 this week.

Acapulco, one of the state’s 50 municipalities and once a favorite landing spot for the Hollywood elite, has reported 41 murders this month.

The severed heads of Aníbal Zuñiga, who ran for councilor of the Guerrero city of Coyuca de Benítez, and his wife, Rubí Bravo, were found on a city street last Thursday.

The rest of the bodies were left in their pickup truck.
