AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli refused to apologize to supporters after the 5-1 derby humiliation at the hands of Inter Milan.
Saturday night’s thrashing was the fifth straight defeat to Inter this year, but there was no sign of remorse afterward.
“I don’t agree with this idea of apologizing to the fans,” an angry Pioli said.
‘Do you think we lost 5-1 to Inter on purpose and lost the derby? We are disappointed, just like the fans.
“You should only apologize if you do something wrong on purpose.”

Further pressed on the subject by reporters, he replied: “You turn around and look at what you want. We have lost five derbies and will try to do better.’
The result continued Inter’s perfect start to the season with four wins from four, but marked a hefty first defeat for Pioli’s Milan.
They lost both legs of their Champions League semi-final with Inter, as well as the corresponding league match 1–0 in February.
Milan also suffered a 3-0 defeat to their rivals in the Italian Super Cup in January, meaning they have scored just once and conceded 12 in five meetings.
‘Inter is strong, that is not surprising. But the result is too tough considering our performance,” Pioli added.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan opened the scoring after just five minutes at San Siro, with Marcus Thuram’s long-range strike doubling the lead.
Rafael Leao pulled a goal back for Milan after 57 minutes, but further goals from Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, a penalty and Davide Frattesi gave Inter an emphatic win.
