Portsmouth eventually won the League One clash 1–0, with Colby Bishop scoring from the spot in the 88th minute.
One Port Vale supporter was particularly irate at the penalty decision and ended up running onto the pitch.
The win was important for Portsmouth, who are two points clear at the top of League One despite having played two more games than nearest challengers Bolton.
Port Vale, meanwhile, are just one place and three points above the relegation zone. They have played two fewer games than Reading, who are in 21st place.
