ABC star Alan Kohler issues an urgent warning to Australia about the prospect of Donald Trump being elected as president

ABC financial reporter Alan Kohler warns of the climate change implications for Australia if Donald Trump is re-elected as president.

Mr. Kohler said in an op-ed that Trump’s disdain for climate change, including calling it a “hoax,” will prevent “the world from reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Trump plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, in which world leaders pledge to prevent global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. If he wants to be re-elected, he wants the United States to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

“Unless Biden steps down, Australia and the world should prepare for a second Trump presidency, which means preparing for global warming far greater than the Paris target of 1.5 degrees Celsius – at least 2 degrees, probably more,” Kohler wrote for The New Daily.

The financial expert said that while it is “virtually impossible” to reach net zero by 2050, the world should still keep it as a goal.

According to Mr Kohler, the actions of some of the most populous countries, such as the US, China, India and Europe, are important for the future of the environment.

He said all four sources together were “adding, not diminishing” fossil fuels.

“If Trump wins in November and Europe takes a right-wing course, there is a good chance that the whole plan (reducing fossil fuel use) will simply be abandoned,” he said.

Mr Kohler said Australia should focus on building a hydrogen and green steel industry, which will reduce carbon emissions.

“If the world’s scientists are not wrong, at some point politicians and businessmen will panic and desperately look for ways to reduce fossil fuel use and save themselves,” he said.

Mr Kohler added that Australia is the country that “receives the most sunlight” and so the country “must get ready to deliver sunlight”.

His comments follow Biden’s much-criticized performance during the 90-minute debate last week.

During the debate, the US president frequently lost track, trailed off mid-sentence and switched topics, leading politicians and pundits from both sides to call for the 81-year-old to resign.

Biden still has no plans to retire or leave office, as he continued to campaign after the debate.

During the debate, Trump was seen wincing as he listened to Biden’s confusion and frequent blunders during the debate. At one point, he told the millions of Americans watching at home, “I really don’t know what he (Biden) just said.

“He is not fit to be president. You know that and I know that.”
