Former Bachelor star Abbie Chatfield has rushed to the defence of 2Day FM’s Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes after a fan branded the comedian an ‘average white man’.

The 27-year-old gushed about Hughes, 51, calling him a ‘hard-working nice guy’ during her It’s a Lot with Abbie Chatfield LiSTNR podcast on Tuesday.

Abbie, who shares judging duties on Channel 10’s The Masked Singer with Dave, radio presenter Chrissie Swan and Mel B, said she would defend the radio star ’til the day she died’.

She explained to listeners a fan had sent her a private message describing Dave as an ”average white man”.

Abbie said she took offence to the phrase, adding that everyone needs to stop being ‘so mean to Hughesy.’

‘He works so hard,’ she said of the comedian, who co-hosts 2Day’s morning show with Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan.

‘When we were filming The Masked Singer, Hughesy would come to the studio after doing his breakfast show and sometimes we wouldn’t finish filming until 2am.’

Abbie reminded her listeners Dave had defended her in the wake of her controversial exit from The Bachelor in 2019.

After the show, Abbie said she went through the worst ‘f**king press ever’ and he took her side against her many critics.

‘None of the radio hosts were as nice to me as Hughesy, everyone went along with the narrative that I was  a villain,’ she said.

The news comes after Dave revealed he has a tumultuous relationship with his new co-star on The Masked Singer Australia, Mel B.

The Spice Girls singer, whose real name is Melanie Brown and also goes by Scary Spice, recently joined the judging panel of the reality show for the 2022 season.

‘We’ve got a new panel. We’re actually already filming, and it’s hectic! Absolutely hectic. I tell you what – I know why Scary Spice is called Scary Spice,’ he said during his appearance on The Sunday Project last month.
