Abandoned puppy marked “ugly” finds a forever home

Every dog has its day! Abandoned Pup Labeled ‘Ugly’ By Potential Adoption Owners Because Of Small Cysts On Her Eyes Finds Forever Home

An abandoned dog who was labeled “ugly” by would-be adoptive parents while waiting to be chosen at an animal shelter has finally found her forever home.

The adorable pooch, named Dutchess, was reportedly taken in by Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida around Christmas 2022 due to a landlord issue.

However, due to a few small bumps on the underside of her eyelids, she had trouble winning over potential adoptive families.

Dutchess gained fans on the internet after the dog shelter posted a plea for her adoption on Facebook, claiming people “couldn’t get past” her minor imperfections and making disparaging comments about her appearance.

And as the post gained more attention, real dog lovers jumped at the chance to care for Dutchess, finally finding her forever home.

Fox 35 Orlando reports that the dog was first taken in by the shelter around December 2022 due to issues with the landlord, and rescuers quickly realized she needed veterinary care because of her eyes.

They posted on Facebook that the vet determined the growths under her eye were causing her discomfort, meaning she would need surgery to remove them.

However, before the operation was performed, the shelter claimed that people who visited made comments about Dutchess’s appearance and were sometimes disparaging.

According to the shelter, some of the comments included, “She looks so ugly. What is that? What’s wrong with her? Is she blind? How much will this cost me? She will never be adopted.’

On Dec. 27, the shelter confirmed that surgery to remove the growths had been successful and it was discovered that they were dermoids, which are rare skin cysts that dogs are sometimes born with.

After the appeal on social media, the shelter was flooded with adoption requests for Dutchess.

Rescue Dogs Dream Inc. took her in and placed her in foster care while she was recovering from surgery, before later giving her to her adoptive parents.

The shelter posted an update to Dutchess’s many fans on social media to say she had already eaten a cheeseburger and was feeling at home. Her new owners had also renamed her Lena.

Speaking to Fox 35 Orlando, Rescue Dogs Dream Inc said, “She now has a new mom and dad to spoil her rotten (dad works from home), and she has a new brother to play with, in her fenced yard.

“She gets to hike and have adventures, and she’s a beloved part of the family.”
