Aaron Ramsdale’s performance in the Carabao Cup this week proves he is now second fiddle to David Raya at Arsenal, according to Ian Ladyman on Mail Sport’s ‘It’s All Coming Up’ show.

The English goalkeeper started the 1-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday evening after Spanish stopper Raya played the last three games against Everton, PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta has said he will rotate his two goalkeepers throughout the season after Raya was loaned from Brentford to provide competition for Ramsdale.

But Mail Sport football editor Ladyman thinks there is a pecking order and that has now become clear.

“Ramsdale was picked for Arsenal’s Carabao Cup match against Brentford last night and that proves to me what I’ve been saying all along – he’s the number two,” he said.

‘He’s Arsenal’s cup keeper. He will be back on the bench on Saturday in Bournemouth (in the Premier League).’

Ramsdale made a series of crucial saves to keep a clean sheet as Arsenal moved to a fourth round draw against West Ham thanks to Reiss Nelson’s early goal.

Afterwards, Arteta said of Ramsdale: ‘He was exceptional everywhere and especially with the situation.

‘We certainly love him. We know his character and what he brings to the team and we are happy to have him. Every player is very important. Today he got a chance to play and he played a really good game.”

Mail Sport pundit Chris Sutton, who appeared on the show with Ladyman, said: ‘The whole point about Mikel Arteta bringing in Raya was that they would have great competition and they do.

‘Thanks to Ramsdale for his performance at Brentford, he kept Arsenal in the game at times and he succeeded.

“I don’t understand your point with this. You said Raya will be number 1, but let’s see how this plays out.”
