Aaron Ramsdale sweating over his position as Arsenal’s No 1 goalkeeper with Mikel Arteta weighing up handing David Raya prolonged first-team chance after impressing in training

Aaron Ramsdale sweated over his position as Arsenal’s number 1 goalkeeper as Mikel Arteta weighed in and handed David Raya an extended first team chance after impressing in training

  • David Raya was loaned out to Arsenal to compete with Aaron Ramsdale
  • There is now a growing feeling that Mikel Arteta would like to give Raya a chance
  • He has impressed in training, especially with his ability to play with the ball

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is under increasing pressure to retain his position as first-choice keeper, while David Raya is on line for a first-team point.

Mailsport understands that Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta is seriously considering giving Raya, a Brentford mercenary, an extended first team chance in the coming weeks.

Ramsdale has established himself as the Gunners’ number 1 since joining from Sheffield United in 2021 and is widely seen as first-choice back-up to England starting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Last season he was named PFA Team of the Year.

However, the feeling is growing at the Emirates that Arteta wants to give Raya the chance to assert his claim to a regular starting role in the team.

It remains to be seen when Arteta decides to change the goal, but Raya is said to have made a big impression in training since his arrival, especially with his ability to play accurately from defense.

If he doesn’t play sooner, Raya’s first chance could come in the Carabao Cup, against his former club Brentford on September 27.

Premier League rules normally prohibit Raya from playing against Thomas Frank’s team, but in the Carabao Cup loan, players can play against their parent club, provided they are cleared to do so.

It is clear that Brentford is unlikely to oppose Raya’s inclusion.

But Raya is now also expected to get the chance to play himself into the Premier League squad, while Ramsdale sweats over his role as the club’s number 1.

Arsenal have signed Spanish keeper Raya on loan for a season with the potential for a permanent deal.
