‘That was an eventful night’: Aaron Ramsdale reveals he watched the opening match of the 2018 World Cup against Tunisia at Lineker’s Bar in AYIA NAPA… four years before being called by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate for Qatar

Aaron Ramsdale has revealed he watched the opening match of the 2018 World Cup against Tunisia at Lineker’s Bar in Ayia Napa.

The Arsenal goalkeeper watched the Three Lions win 2-1 in the final against Tunisia thanks to a late goal from Harry Kane in the Cypriot tourist resort.

Ramsdale’s experience at the notoriously popular party destination couldn’t be more different than England’s luxurious base in Qatar – where the 24-year-old traveled as part of the Three Lions squad for the next edition of the competition.

At an English press conference in Qatar, he said: ‘Oh God! I watched the first game in Ayia Napa… that was a possible night.

‘Then the match against Colombia was the night before the preparation. There was a lot of cheering in the front room and I still get goosebumps. A very special evening.’

At the time, the Gunners stopper was playing at Bournemouth, where Ramsdale broke into the team in 2019-20.

The Cherries went down that year, but Ramsdale impressed and earned a return to youth club Sheffield United, where he was relegated again despite fine individual performances.

The three-cap international moved to Arsenal in August 2021 and quickly established himself as first-choice, with his confidence and distribution playing a key part in helping Mikel Arteta’s side to first place in the Premier League this campaign.

Ramsdale and Newcastle’s Nick Pope are likely to act as competition and cover for manager Gareth Southgate’s first-choice, Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
