New York Yankees star Aaron Judge told reporters that the big toe injury he suffered last season would likely impact the rest of his career, while also saying he hopes the team will add another talented player in free agency.
Judge missed 42 games after tearing a ligament in his right big toe when he crashed into the Dodger Stadium fence on June 3. His absence played a major role in the Yankees falling out of the playoffs.
Despite his extended absence, the 6-foot-4, 282-pound slugger returned on July 28 and ended up hitting .262 with 37 home runs and 75 RBIs in 106 games.
But ahead of the new season, Judge admitted he will have to deal with the toe injury for the rest of his career.
Speaking on Tuesday, he said: “I think it will be constant maintenance, I think for the rest of my career. With such injuries you just have to stay on top of it so that it doesn’t flare up again.’

“I keep getting injured in right field, so I think that’s why they moved me to center field,” he added, prompting laughter at a news conference.
‘I think it’s about playing smarter, understanding the pitch, understanding the dimensions. In that case I thought I had gone the extra mile and in that situation I didn’t, so that always comes back to me.
‘I have to be a little smarter there. So yes, just like this year, I have to play smart. But no, I don’t think it will be cement bottoms of walls in center field.”
Journalists also asked him if he believed the team still had a move left in it because of the many big-name pitchers still on the free agent market.
“I hope so, they’re always working, you know,” the power-hitting slugger replied.
Judge also told reporters that he hopes the Yankees will make another big free agency signing
“You know, that’s the great thing about being here with the Yankees, they’re always trying to improve. They’re always trying to make moves… if it’s through trade, if it’s through free choice.
“So I definitely feel like there might be another move coming, but you never know when we’ll see it.”
Last week, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman echoed similar sentiments that the organization may not be done adding firepower ahead of the upcoming season when he said, “We are in no way “with our pencils down “. If there are ways to improve the club, we can be open to that.’
New York has been heavily linked to National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell, as well as a reunion with World Series champion Jordan Montgomery.
