A24 is one of the rare independent film studios to have been granted a SAG-AFTRA waiver to begin production on Alex Scharfman’s horror comedy Death of a Unicorn starring Jenna Ortega and David Lowery’s musical drama Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway during the strike in the lead.

It helps that A24 is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, so it’s not tied to companies affiliated with the organization – according to Variety.

SAG-AFTRA officially went on strike on July 14 — its first picket line in 43 years — to negotiate a fair contract with artificial intelligence updates, streaming revenue sharing and base increases in minimums.
