A woman found out she had been sexually assaulted after a man she was dating sent her images of him abusing her while she slept in the same bed as him.
David Wiari Wehi, 50, faced the Rotorua District Court, in New Zealand’s North Island, and pleaded guilty to three charges, including sexual offense by unlawful sexual connection, threatening to kill and making intimate visual recordings.
Ahead of his sentencing next month, a police summary of the facts was released, revealing shocking details of the woman’s sexual abuse.
Wehi and the woman began an intimate relationship, but after a few months he became “possessive and persistent,” the summary said.
The woman set clear boundaries with Wehi and on one occasion when he wanted to use his mobile phone to record her sexually, she made it clear that she ‘wasn’t into that’ and did not consent to intimate visual recordings.
The woman was filmed sexually explicit while she slept and was threatened with the videos
The summary stated that the couple did not see each other for about two months and when they did, Wehi became possessive and angry because he wanted more from the relationship.
The woman received 270 text messages, most of which were abusive, leading her to block Wehi’s number before unblocking it a few weeks later.
She met him again that month and stayed with him overnight. The couple met the next night and he stayed at the woman’s house.
The woman recalled that she went straight to bed wearing her nightgown and underwear and did not have sexual intercourse with Wehi, the Rotorua daily mail reported.
When she woke up, her underwear was missing and she was covered only by a sheet while her blanket was on the floor.
The summary showed that the woman didn’t think too much about it at the time, as Wehi had left before she woke up.
However, in the following weeks he began contacting her again and sending her threatening messages.
She received three photos and two videos from Wehi, one of which showed her being sexually assaulted while she slept.
She recognized her body and bedding in the videos and could even hear herself snoring, the summary said.
The woman said she was not aware she was having sexual contact with Wehi and did not consent to being recorded.

Wehi threatened to send the videos to her friends, claiming he would create a Facebook page where he would post them so everyone would see the recordings.
He continued to send threatening messages and claimed he would kill her and throw her in a hot pool or burn her house down, the summary said.
The woman feared for her life, blocked Wehi’s number and passed on the messages and recordings to the police.
Wehi will appear in court for sentencing on July 26.
The 50-year-old faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, with sexual abuse carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years, with a threat of up to seven years in prison and three years in prison involving an intimate visual recording.
