At first glance, this 19th century optical puzzle may appear to simply depict a river, trees, and a mountain in the background.
However, hidden inside are at least ten animals: a parrot, a bull, an elephant, a deer, a crocodile, a horse, a goose, a fox, a rooster, and a man smoking.
An old Victorian card with the puzzle is currently for sale on eBay for $30 The card advertises the William Cameron Coup Racecourse. Coup ran a traveling circus and transported animals between North American cities on a circus train, according to the listing.
The card was a useful marketing device that gave people an excuse to keep the card or even pass it on to someone else.

Perhaps most obvious is the elephant and crocodile in the center and right of the image. In the tree on the left is the parrot and the bull.
Suspended from the tree is a man face down, listed on the original card as ‘man smoking’.
On the mountain in the upper right is the goose and the horse. Other animals on the vintage card, but not highlighted in the solution above, include an owl, a pig, and a frog.
