The overconfident fan left rowers stunned as he dove into the Naviglio Grande and attempted to swim alongside them.
Delighted fans cheered him on as he stripped down to his boxers to cool off in the canal, lined with Newcastle and England flags as supporters prepared for the match.
Despite his bravado and the enthusiastic cheers of the crowd, the daring swimmer managed only a few strokes before being beaten by the boat.
As the rowboat disappears into the distance, clearly winning the competition, boos erupt as the man slows to paddle dejectedly.
