A new Ticket To Ride trailer teases a major update

Ticket to drivea family-friendly experience and an exceptional gateway to modern day board games, perhaps getting the legacy treatment.

The original Ticket to drive, released in 2004, is a popular strategy game about connecting train lines across the continental United States. It was awarded the coveted Speil des Jahres that year, one of the most prestigious in all table games. Over the past two decades, that game has spawned several different expressions, with maps depicting parts of Europe, Asia, and other continents, and several digital versions for PC and mobile devices.

A CGI trailer launched on social media on Tuesday teases a new edition of the game, which will reportedly feature input from original designer Alan R. Moon. But the emblem Also has two names that cast a long shadow in the table space: Rob Daviau and Matt Leacock.

Daviau invented the legacy-like format of modern board games with Risk: inheritance, a version of the classic wargame that evolves and changes over multiple play sessions, telling a larger, overarching story of an entire fictional world. He later expanded the legacy concept to multiple additional board games, including Seafall. However, the idea really caught fire when Daviau teamed up with Leacock, creator of the wildly popular board game Pandemic. Together the couple created Pandemic Legacya critically acclaimed board game widely regarded as one of the best ever made.

Bringing Daviau and Leacock together for the first time since Pandemic Legacy: Season 0released in 2020, all but assures this next version of Ticket to drive becomes a legacy game. But Asmodee, who owns it Ticket to drive developer Days of Wonder, tells Polygon it has nothing else to add…for now.
