A North Carolina man who wielded a knife and played the Dukes of Hazzard theme song while driving a stolen tractor has been pulled over after leading police on a wild chase.

The City of Boone Police Department said it received a call about a John Deere tractor “driving erratically in a parking lot trying to hit pedestrians” around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and named Ronnie Hicks as driver.

Footage of the incident shows Hicks tearing down stop signs and swerving into oncoming traffic as several police officers chase him to the Route 421 intersection.

At least eight police cars with flashing lights can be seen meeting Hicks at the junction to stop the farm vehicle, which is said to have driven no more than 20 miles during the hour-long chase.

The tractor, which has an average price of between $10,000 and $30,000, can be seen speeding through red lights during the chase which was posted on social media by several passers-by.

Department chief Andy Le Beau said in a Facebook post that he ordered officers to shoot at the tractor’s wheels, but a determined Hicks continued the chase for a few more miles despite losing a tire.

“We tried using stopper sticks, but they weren’t very effective on the tractor,” he said.

“Our officers were concerned for the well-being of our citizens as Hicks was intentionally driving the tractor into oncoming traffic.

‘Hicks also intentionally rammed a Boone police vehicle [and] once it turned onto Old 421, we worried about Parkway Elementary and were determined not to let it get that far.

‘When the tractor was in an isolated area, one of our officers shot out the tractor’s tires (with my permission) as the spike strips were not effective.’

One person who posted footage of the chase on Facebook captioned the video: “Dude playing Dukes of Hazzard song running from the law ON A JOHN DEERE TRACTOR in Boone this morning?!”

The post left some users shocked, with one commenting on the make and model of the farm vehicle: ‘Well, nothing runs like a Deere!’

In the video, the Dukes of Hazzard (DOH) theme song can be heard softly as the vehicle slowly rolls along.

DOH is an American action comedy television series that aired on CBS from January 26, 1979 to February 8, 1985.

The show follows the story of two cousins, Bo and Luke Duke, who live in rural Georgia and are on probation for smuggling alcohol.

The show’s premise features several escapades in which the Dukes attempt to evade ‘crooked county commissioner’ Boss Hogg and law enforcement officer Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane.

Hicks has yet to explain why he was playing the theme song for the popular TV show, but its opening sequence is synonymous with a wild police chase that sees the cousin’s car launching itself through the air to evade the cops.
