A driver fleeing New York City police speeds onto a sidewalk and injures 7 pedestrians

NEW YORK — A driver fleeing police in Manhattan drove onto the sidewalk early Monday morning and injured seven pedestrians, including a woman trapped under a food truck that was struck by the sedan, police said.

The 39-year-old woman was trapped under the food truck in downtown Manhattan and six other pedestrians were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition. According to the New York Police Department, the driver of the vehicle and a police officer were also taken to hospitals after the crash, which occurred just after 1:30 a.m.

None of the injuries appeared life-threatening.

The crash occurred less than two hours after thousands of New Year's Eve revelers gathered in Times Square, about a dozen blocks north of Manhattan.

Police said officers responded to “a possible crime” at the intersection of West 33rd St. and 7th Ave., near Penn Station, and attempted to intervene in a dispute in a vehicle. The unidentified 44-year-old driver struck several vehicles before speeding off onto a sidewalk and hitting the food truck. The driver was arrested a few blocks away.

The investigation continued, police said.
