A 4.7 magnitude earthquake rattles the Los Angeles area

LOS ANGELES — A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Los Angeles area Thursday morning, swaying lights and shaking some people from their beds. No injuries or damage were reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 4 miles (7 kilometers) north of Malibu and the quake struck about 7 miles (11 kilometers) below the Earth’s surface.

The tremor was felt as far as 45 miles (72 kilometers) away in Orange County, where people reported moving objects in their homes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the Fire Department and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services are inspecting the city for damage.

According to Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen breakfast restaurant in Malibu, the shaking lasted a few seconds and kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, but there was no damage.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Vasquez said. “Thank God nothing fell.”

People, including several celebrities, posted on social media reports that they had woken up with a jolt.

Hotel heiress and media personality Paris Hilton wrote on X: “That #earthquake was scary.” Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian posted: “Damn that was a big one.”

Some residents said they were warned by the state’s earthquake warning system.

The earthquake comes as the region is dealing with three major forest fires burning east of Los Angeles, burning dozens of homes and forcing thousands of people to evacuate. The fires broke out during a scorching heat wave that has just subsided.

In recent months, a number of earthquakes have been felt in the area, including a 4.4 magnitude quake in August that shook the nerves of the population. Los Angeles area to San Diego, swaying buildings, knocking things off shelves and setting off car alarms. The quake caused a pipe to burst in the ornate 1927 Pasadena City Hall building.
