Bangladesh’s leading Test wicket-taker Shakib Al Hasan is BANNED from bowling by ECB after being reported for a suspect action during county championship match for champions Surrey
- Shakib Al Hasan’s suspension applies worldwide according to international protocols
- He is not eligible to participate in ECB competitions until he passes a re-evaluation
Bangladesh’s leading Test wicket-taker Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of bowling after playing for provincial champions Surrey in September.
The suspension imposed on matches under the ECB’s jurisdiction – following an independent review at Loughborough University earlier this month – extends worldwide under international protocols.
Thirty-seven-year-old Shakib, who has 246 Test wickets and 712 for Bangladesh across all formats, was playing in a one-off match against Somerset at Taunton when the champions’ regular spinners Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence were away on England duty.
He finished with figures of nine for 193, but Surrey lost a dramatic match by 111 runs and umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and David Millns reported him for a suspicious action.
Laboratory tests on his bowling on Monday supported their visual assessment, with Shakib’s elbow extension exceeding the 15-degree threshold.
Under regulations, he is now ineligible to bowl in competitions regulated here – as well as those abroad – until he passes a reassessment.
