A young British climber has died after falling on a Spanish mountain.
The 20-year-old man, who has not been named, fell and injured himself on Wednesday while exploring an area known as Puente del Mono – which translates in English as Monkey Bridge – near the village of El Chorro.
He was knocked unconscious and went into cardiac arrest by the time first responders arrived by helicopter in the mountains near Malaga.
Police tried to save the man by hoisting him from the rocky surface, but he was later pronounced dead.
The alarm was raised at around 11am yesterday and the climber is said to have crossed a protected climbing route called a via ferrata, where a metal rail is bolted into the mountain that users can clip onto and use as a safety line.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Malaga, in his first comment on the tragedy, said: ‘Members of the Guardia Civil’s specialist mountain rescue team, based in Alora, near Malaga, supported by a Guardia Civil helicopter, based in Granada, rescued the victim rescued. body of a young British man.

It was not immediately clear this morning whether the climber was on holiday or lives in Spain.
An autopsy will now take place and police will report to an investigating magistrate in charge of an ongoing inquest into the incident.
