Patriots QB Drake Maye speaks out on alma mater UNC hiring Bill Belichick

The second most well-known connection between the North Carolina football program and the New England Patriots, Drake Maye, has spoken out about Bill Belichick taking over in Chapel Hill.

Belichick wasn’t with the Patriots when they drafted Maye from North Carolina in April.

It’s possible that Belichick watched tons of Maye films in his search for his then-existing future in New England.

Despite the two never crossing paths in football circles, they represent two of the few to have worn Tar Heel and Patriot Blue.

“Obviously a legendary coach with the success he had here and what a great place Chapel Hill is,” Maye said of Belichick at UNC. “So when you have a legendary NFL coach going back to college, I think that’s cool. It’s quite interesting to me.’

Now at age 72, Belichick is starting his first job in college football after nearly 50 years in the NFL.

Belichick going to the college game sent shockwaves through the sport as many believed he was trying to re-enter the NFL coaching sphere.

Since many teams likely won’t give Belichick the kind of managerial control he had in 24 seasons with the Patriots, he’ll head to Chapel Hill where he’ll have that level of power.

Belichick will quickly show how much of an impact he has on recruiting as the college football signing period ends in February.

North Carolina lost a lot of talent to the transfer portal and did not sign four-star quarterback recruit Bryce Baker.

Bringing Baker into the fold officially would be the first encouraging sign for arguably the greatest NFL coach of all time in a different environment.
