NFL legend Phil Simms has suggested that Tom Brady’s actions damaged the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played a part in the recent slump.

Tampa Bay fell to 3-4 on Sunday with a shocking 21-3 loss to the lowly Carolina Panthers, extending their losing streak to two games.

The seven-time Super Bowl was criticized for his decision to attend Robert Kraft’s wedding the Friday before Tampa’s loss to the Steelers the week before, causing him to miss Saturday’s walkthrough and team meetings.

“The distraction he caused: Going away for 10 days in training camp, what happened to the wedding, is a distraction for the football team. It hurts,” Simms said on Tuesday’s episode of Inside The NFL.

The panel — which included Simms, Ray Lewis, Julian Edelman and Brandon Marshall — discussed what, among others, Brady would do if they could go back to the off-season.

The two-time Super Bowl winner believes Brady would make a drastically different decision than not to retire 40 days after finishing his off-season career if he had the time again.

“If you could go back in time, Tom Brady would definitely stay in Tampa in retirement,” Simms said. “He didn’t know he was going to lose his center and two guards, that’s one thing.”

Buccaneers Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen could be on the field in November after sustaining a knee injury during a training camp that many believed would be the end of the season.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is under fire this week for the team’s overall performance, and Simms thinks his coaching mentor is a big hole in Tampa’s Super Bowl puzzle.

“I think most of all they miss the bad guy,” Simms added. ‘And who’s the bad guy? That was Bruce Arians. I think they miss him.’

Arians retired after losing last season’s NFC Divisional playoff to eventual Super Bowl champion LA Rams and moved to a front office position with the Bucs.

Several reports had suggested there was a rift between Brady and his former coach that forced the hand over the organization, but Arians has denied those rumours.

“We have a great relationship,” Arians told reporters at a press conference for new head coach Todd Bowles in March.

‘I mean, all the players – there are a few here – they’ve all been scolded [by me]including him,” Arians said then, gesturing at the grinning Brady.

“So that’s just part of me, you know? That’s nothing new, but we have a great relationship.’
