Urgent warning to Aussies on the gifts to avoid this Christmas that could be deadly
Australians stocking up on presents during the Christmas shopping season have been warned not to buy products that could pose deadly dangers.
The government’s product safety regulator, run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), has issued a number of product recalls for items that could end up under the tree and their owners in hospital over the festive period.
Anyone who has already purchased any of the items should immediately stop using them and return them to the place of purchase for a refund, the ACCC said.
Jishaku: the game of magnetic action
The safety regulator said this board game does not comply with the permanent ban on small powerful magnets.
“There is a permanent ban on loose or loose small powerful magnets with a flux index greater than 50 (kG)2 mm2 used in certain toys or jewelry,” the regulator said.
‘If children swallow multiple magnets, they can stick together in the intestines or digestive tissues, which can lead to serious internal injury or death. They also pose a choking risk.”
The product is sold by Booktopia, which is also issuing the recall.
Owners should immediately stop using these products, keep them out of the reach of children, and contact Booktopia Customer Support for a full refund and further instructions.

‘It also doesn’t come with the required warning label.

VidaXL foldable dog pool
The ACCC said these dog pools, which can be purchased for furry members of the family during the summer period, pose a dangerous hazard.
Despite being shallow, they pose a drowning risk to children.
They are available in blue and red and in different sizes, ranging from 80 cm x 20 cm to 300 cm x 40 cm.
‘The products do not meet the mandatory standard for portable swimming pools. The products do not have the required warning signals and messages,” the report said.

Pedal Packer cargo bike
This model of pedal-powered bicycle, sold by 99 Bikes Pty Ltd, has been recalled due to safety concerns.
“The affected mounting plate welds of the stand may be defective on some bicycles and the stand may fail if overloaded,” the ACCC said.
‘Consumers may not be aware of the risks associated with using a kickstand or carrying a passenger on the rear portion of the bicycle.
Shoppers who purchased the Pedal Packer cargo bike from 99 Bikes should contact the supplier for an inspection and to resolve the issue
‘There is a risk of serious injury or an accident if a passenger on the rear seat of the bicycle comes into contact with the moving parts of the bicycle.
‘There is also a risk of injury and material damage if the stand breaks during use.’
Those who purchased the product should stop using the affected bikes and contact 99 Bikes to arrange a frame inspection.
It says 99 Bikes will repair affected bikes and apply warning labels. Some bicycles may need to have the entire frame replaced.
