A newly surfaced scene deleted by Hawkeye is a defining moment for the Marvel hero
Of all the superheroes in the original lineup, I wouldn’t expect Hawkeye to have one of the most interesting backstories. But it turns out he’s not just an average guy with a wife and kids; he and his mother were criminals who traveled the country robbing convenience stores.
A new deleted scene, which just debuted on the Hawkeye season 1 steelbook and premiering exclusively on Polygon, reveals the moment young Clint Barton’s life of crime took a sideways turn. While the scene previously floated across the internet as a blurred leak/rip, the clip now exists in clear and pristine form, allowing us to appreciate just how much Diesel La Toracca looks like a young Jeremy Renner.
In the scene, one of Clint and his mother’s robberies goes horribly wrong, and future Hawkeye takes aim with a gun to resolve the situation. But he decides very consciously not to shoot the man holding his mother. As she is taken away in the police car, he apologizes and says he missed. But as she rightly puts it to him: “You never miss.”
It’s pretty meaty for a character who’s only really interesting because he’s a completely normal guy who happens to be really good at archery. Did he shoot people with guns as a kid? Did he kill before he was 12? The sign he never misses seems to imply that he has at least seriously injured someone. Did that #trauma make him switch from a gun to a bow and arrow?
It’s unlikely we’ll ever get the full MCU Hawkeye backstory (or even more details about how he met Linda Cardellini). And the chances of Jeremy Renner saying anything about the Jeremy Renner app are very slim, since the app no longer exists. Anyway, we have the Hawkeye steelbook to enjoy.
Hawkeye season 1, along with other Disney Plus series Loki season 2, Ahsoka season 1 and The Mandalorian Season 3 is available for the first time on 4K UHD Blu-ray, which is where you (wisely) buy your physical media.
