Creature Commandos is full of social outcasts and grieving misfits, but Rick Flag Sr’s voice actor is convinced he’s the DCU TV show’s most ‘tragic’ character

Creature commands star Frank Grillo has given his opinion on why Rick Flag Sr may be the animated series’ most “tragic” character.
Speaking to Ny Breaking ahead of the Max series’ December 5 debut, Grillo, who voices Flag Sr, suggested that the team’s commander-in-chief may be the group’s most vulnerable member. Grillo even believes that Flag Sr’s ‘humanity’, despite his leadership skills, means he will be more conflicted than his super-powered DC comrades when asked to make tough decisions.

As Grillo explains, the death of his son – Rick Flag Jr The suicide squad still weighs heavily on his mind; an emotionally devastating event that can also affect the choices he makes Creature commands.
“Rick is supposed to anchor everything in reality,” Grillo told me. “He has his own things going on, especially after the death of his son. There’s an element of trying to reconcile that tragedy and using that to not only ground that character, but make him more relatable as a human being than anything else. Often you (the viewer) see things through their eyes, which is more representative of the audience, so it’s a necessary element to have.”
An affair with a femme fatale
It will come as no shock to learn that Flag Sr’s most notable relationships came early Creature commandsanyway – be with his fellow human beings. With Flag Sr leading a group of monster-inspired supervillains and anti-heroes, many of whom have seemingly lost every ounce of their own humanity, the dynamic he shares with them is awkward at best. So it’s the relationship between Flag Sr and ARGUS leader Amanda Waller, and a much stronger relationship he has with Princess Ilana of Pokolistan, that he prioritizes in the DCU Chapter One series.

Elaborating on Flag Sr’s affair with Ilana, Grillo said: “It’s a great indication of his vulnerability and humanity that when he gets a very beautiful woman who always gets what she wants, it’s very hard for him to say ‘no’ say. that human element that makes him interesting. You know, he can succumb to the same desires that all men have.”
Given Flag Sr.’s inability to reject Ilana’s advances, one thing leads to another and… well, you get the idea. So how did Grillo end up recording all kinds of sex-based grunts and other sounds to depict the couple’s fornication in the series?
“It was very interesting to simulate passionate, steamy sex in a voice recording booth!” Grillo laughed as he answered my question. “Maria (Bakalova, Ilana’s voice actor) and I sit in different booths and, you know, we scream and writhe and make all these surreal noises. And James (Gunn, the co-chief of DC Studios) is never happy, so He always said to us, ‘No, do one more, please!'”
