Senior Liberal frontbencher’s shock resignation as he suddenly reveals he’s quitting Parliament after almost two decades
Senior Liberal senator and former minister Simon Birmingham is retiring after 17 years as a senator for South Australia.
Peter Dutton confirmed the announcement on Thursday afternoon and thanked Senator Birmingham for his commitment to the party.
“Can I sincerely thank Simon Birmingham, who has just announced his retirement as our Leader of the Opposition in the Senate,” the Opposition Leader said.
“Again, Birmo has a young family and is spending more time with them.
“He has given so much to our country.”
