T.J. Holmes shares worrying health update after enduring severe pain: ‘Hard words to hear’

TJ Holmes has revealed he damaged a ligament in his leg after competing in the New York City Marathon with partner Amy Robach.

The former Good Morning America host, 47, and Robach, 51, completed the epic 26.2-mile journey through all five boroughs in four hours, 14 minutes and 39 seconds.

However, the podcaster has revealed that he has been suffering from ‘severe’ pain since taking part in the endurance race.

He decided to see a doctor and found out he would have to wear a brace for the next six weeks while he recovered from the injury.

X-rays from his clinic visit showed damage to the right side of his left foot and ankle.

‘Damn. DAMN it. DAMN!!! Tough words for a runner (like me) to hear: “You need to stop running.”

‘The pain after the marathon became so severe that I went back to the doctor, who told me I may have a ligament tear… or at best a ligament strain. He put me in a brace and told me not to run for the next four to six weeks.

“I think that gives me enough time to prepare for #NYCMarathon2025,” Holmes subtitled the series yesterday.

Within hours, legions of his fans gathered to send him well wishes and shared their own injury stories – with many advising him to follow the doctor’s orders.

‘Oh shame, such a shame! It sure is hard not being able to run! I hope you heal soon,” one person prayed.

While another joked: ‘Man…..you better listen to your doctor. I kept walking on concrete after they told me to stop. Cartilage GONE!!! The entire knee had to be replaced. Be safe.”

One fan also shared, “My only suggestion is to listen to your doctor. I didn’t. I’m now 65 and at 25 my orthopedic doctor told me to quit. I didn’t stop until I was 50 and the knee was completely shot. My titanium knee doesn’t like running, damn it.’

‘Get well soon!! And please follow the doctor’s advice and instructions to the letter. They tell you what they do for a reason,” another added.

“I wish a speedy recovery TJ. I’m sure you’ll be running again soon!’, a well-wisher also said.

Two days after the marathon, Holmes had also posted a photo of him and his former Good Morning America cohost looking utterly exhausted, Robach with her head in her hands.

“How we got from the starting line to this… on a marathon day of near-repeat disaster, tons of Twizzlers, grinding iPhones, hanging out with Governor Hochul and vomiting. A lot [vomiting emoji]’, Holmes captioned the photo.

Robach – who was fired from ABC along with her boyfriend last year after their affair was exposed by DailyMail.com – also took to Instagram and shared some more cheerful photos, including her and Holmes with their medals in hand.

She wrote alongside the snaps: ‘We’re done! The first twenty were great, the last six were the hardest I’ve ever had.

‘It was a beautiful day with so many highs and a few lows – a huge thank you to the City of New York for organizing another incredible day, perhaps the best day of the year for the city: a day of community and unity and joy.’

The health update comes a month after Holmes ended up in an ambulance after suffering an injury alongside Robach during the Chicago Marathon.

The former morning show host posted photos and videos of himself in the back of an ambulance during the long-distance running event on Instagram on October 13.

Another of the snaps saw legs and feet as he was strapped to the stretcher.

There was also a video that appeared to be taken by Robach showing his leg and looking at Holmes who seemed quite concerned.

He captioned the post: “So this happened. The full story follows…. [tearing up emoji] #DNF #chicagomarathon.”

Holmes had previously been open about his health concerns while training for the marathon, as he said on the September 30 episode of their podcast Amy & TJ: “One of the two of us might not run the marathon.

“And he was almost in tears this morning after an eight-mile run and I only managed 1.6 miles.”

Robach revealed at the time that her partner was experiencing problems with his Achilles tendon when she said: ‘I have to say, you were so on top of it.

‘Every day you make ice, you heat it. You went to a foot specialist who did laser heat therapy. You did everything you could. You take a steady dose of Aleve and Advil and it hasn’t gotten better.”

Last month he revealed that he had been suffering from the pain for two months, which he described at the time as ‘inflammation in the back of my heel’.

Robach added that Holmes had considered whether or not to run the race for fear of serious injury.
