Brentford have successfully appealed Christian Norgaard’s red card against Everton after the FA confirmed VAR was wrong to recommend a dismissal.

Norgaard was given his marching orders in the first half at Goodison Park after stretching to reach the ball in Everton’s penalty area and colliding with Jordan Pickford.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially gave no foul, but video assistant referee Matt Donohue quickly recommended an on-field review and a red card.

After the match, Bees boss Thomas Frank, who was shown a yellow card for protesting the decision, confirmed the club would appeal.

“For me it’s not a red card,” he said.

Frank then added: ‘The referee has been told to make decisions on the pitch, which in my opinion was a good decision on the pitch but was overturned by VAR.

‘If the VAR is told that with one leg on one’s legs is a red card, then we have to tell that too and that has to be consistent in the future – very, very consistent in the future.

“If it’s not the law or the rule, then Chris [Kavangh] was not brave enough to overturn the situation. Moreover, there were several Everton players who said: “That’s not a red card”. We will probably object to this.

“We need to find out if this is the future law, and if not, then it is [disciplinary commission] gotta turn it around.

“If they don’t reverse it, they’ve changed too.”

The FA announced this morning that the call-up was successful, making Norgaard available for selection for the visit of Leicester City on Saturday.

“Christian Norgaard will be available for Brentford’s next three matches following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal,” the FA statement said.

‘The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Everton on Saturday, November 23.’
