Ruben Amorim has played down Ed Sheeran’s awkward post-match gate crash after Manchester United’s draw at Ipswich, insisting: ‘It was nothing’.
Amorim was being interviewed by Sky Sports on Portman Road when pop sensation Sheeran accidentally interrupted the live segment.
Sheeran has since apologized, calling himself a ‘little ab****nd’ in a short social media post, but Amorim believes the strange moment was blown out of proportion.
“Here you are used to that, but in Portugal it is so different,” he said during his press conference ahead of United’s Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt.
‘I think you sometimes overcomplicate things. It was nothing. It was a simple matter of saying hello to one of the commenters. So it was nothing for me.
‘I was just thinking about the game. I was with Roy Keane. Roy Keane was the real star of that panel. It was really okay. It was nothing special.’
Sheeran, a die-hard Ipswich supporter who sponsors the club’s kit and owns a minority stake, said he was unaware Amorim was being interviewed.
He added that he had tried to speak to Jamie Redknapp, who was part of the Sky Sports panel along with Keane, Izzy Christiansen and presenter Kelly Cates.
“Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, I actually didn’t realize he was being interviewed at the time and came over to say hello and goodbye to Jamie,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. ‘Obvz I feel a bit strange, but life goes on.
‘Fantastic game, congratulations to everyone involved x.’
Amorim seemed visibly frustrated by the situation and even shook his head, but the interview eventually went ahead after Sheeran left.
