Harris was forced to enter the race last summer after Joe Biden suddenly withdrew following his debate disaster. Ultimately, she kept most of his campaign apparatus in Delaware, while bringing in some of her own advisers. But her political options are far from over. She was the frontrunner in a recent 2028 poll, despite complaints from the party apparatus.

Advisors and allies say they have been instructed by the vice president to “keep her options open,” according to Politico. She could even pursue an open governor’s seat in her home state of California in 2026.
