MEXICO CITY — President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested that Mexico could retaliate with its own tariffs after US President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican goods if the country does not stem the flow of drugs and migrants across the border.

Sheinbaum said she was willing to engage in conversations about the issues, but said drugs were an American problem.

“One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on, until we endanger common businesses,” Sheinbaum said, referring to U.S. automakers that have factories on both sides of the border.

She said Tuesday that Mexico has done a lot to stem the flow of migrants, noting that “caravans of migrants are no longer reaching the border.” She also said Mexico has made efforts to stem the flow of drugs such as the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, even though it is “a problem of public health and consumption in the society of your country.”
