Hugh Jackman reveals heartbreaking details about his father’s death

Hugh Jackman is candid about his father’s death.

Christopher Jackman died on Father’s Day in 2021, just before the Wolverine star began filming The Son, a drama about a troubled relationship between a father and his teenage son.

Speak with Variety On his new film, Hugh explained why he didn’t take time off to mourn his family tragedy.

“My father never missed a workday,” he told the industry bible.

‘I could feel him. I knew if he could talk to me, he’d say, “You’ve got to go to work! What are you talking about?” I felt his presence on the set.’

The Broadway star, 54, went on to share more personal details about his father’s death, revealing that he knew “the end was near.”

“He was apparently gone, mentally,” Hugh said. ‘He would smile a little more. I didn’t know he was going to die physically, but I knew it was a kind of goodbye.’

He “just started crying” during a particularly emotional scene, he said.

The film, which also stars Laura Dern, employed psychologists on set to support the cast and crew.

“The subject was really difficult,” Hugh said. “For many days crew members said, ‘I need help.’ Some of them would leave for a few hours.’

Hugh first shared the news of his father Christopher’s passing on September 6, 2021. The British-born accountant is believed to have been 84 years old when he died.

“In the early hours of Father’s Day, my father passed away peacefully,” the X-Men star wrote on Instagram.

“And although there is deep sadness, I am so grateful and loving. My father was, in a word, extraordinary. He devoted his life to his family, his work, and his faith. I pray that he is now at peace with God.”

Christopher raised Hugh and his brothers Ian and Ralph as a single father in Sydney after his wife Grace McNeil moved back to the UK with their daughters Zoe and Sonya.

Hugh was only eight years old at the time.

Hugh, who married his wife Deborra-Lee Furness in 1996, paid tribute to his father many times throughout his career, describing him as his “rock” in an interview with 60 Minutes in 2012.

“It’s always, ‘How’s Deb doing?’ It’s not about work and I think he lives with that, probably with some of his regrets and feelings of maybe he…put too much into his career at the wrong time and he doesn’t want me to make that mistake.” he said about the advice his father had given him.

“And so, in his gentle way, he always reminds me that this is the most important thing.”

In a 2020 Instagram post, Hugh wrote: “My dad taught me to always keep my promises… Even if it turns out there’s a better option or something that would benefit me more. Be true to your word.’
