‘I used to go to gay clubs and dance for six hours, wearing a skirt and stuff like that.

He added: “I think it’s interesting. I mean, I find change interesting. And I mean, you know, I wrote a book fifteen years ago called The Boy in the Dress, which was seen as a little more daring at the time.

“And it’s always something – I’ve always wanted to celebrate differences, so I’ve always found it exciting.”

Reflecting on his identity, both now and in his younger years, he said, “I kind of think, where would I position myself if I was 19 or 20 now?

‘Because I went to Bristol University and did a drama degree. And I think that’s the course where you’re probably going to… if there’s a group of people who are going to be most interested in that kind of area, most attracted to that area, it’s probably going to be drama students.”

Later in the podcast, host Josh Szeps asked, “What about your sexuality?” You always lean towards ‘Britain’s most famous bi-curious comedian’ or something like that. Was that a true reflection of your adolescence, did you mess with boys?’

David replied, “Yes, I would say so. Yes, that’s what I was always at home with. Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I were just gay. Because I’m really attracted to gay things. I really like gay culture.”

Reflecting on the differences between himself and his BBC co-star Matt Lucas, he continued: ‘It’s interesting because Matt Lucas is gay. And he likes football and he likes musicals too, actually…

“But yeah, I’d say I’m probably more of a camper than he is. It’s hard, I don’t know.’

It comes after David revealed his mother found him ‘lifeless on the bed’ when he tried to kill himself during his student days.

The comedian suffered from depression during his youth and attempted his life when he returned home from university at Christmas.

Speak with The timesDavid said it was his mother Kathleen who found him and credited her with helping him get out of his depression.

He said: ‘The weight of my depression had become unbearable. I knew from an early age that something was wrong: a feeling of unbearable loneliness that I could never escape.

‘Desperation overcame me that first Christmas when I came back from university, and I couldn’t live with it anymore. My mother discovered me lying lifeless in bed after overdosing.

‘It broke her heart. She cried for weeks. I’m ashamed that I was so selfish to put her through this, but her boundless love got me through it.”

David has always been close to his mother and said he always felt like he could be “completely myself” with her.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge said Kathleen encouraged his “flamboyant side” and rented him a wedding dress when he was cast as the queen in All the King’s Men while attending an all-boys high school.

He added that his mother was always supportive of his comedy career, while his father Peter was more skeptical that he could make a career out of it.

David has previously spoken about his struggles with depression, including in his 2012 autobiography, Camp David.

He wrote: “Many people who suffer from depression confirm that early morning is the worst time. At 4am you are all alone.

‘There’s no one to call. It wasn’t just the terrible basic sadness I felt, but also the fear. Fear of death, fear of life, fear of love, fear of everything.’

During his appearance on Bear Grylls’ ITV show Bear’s Mission in 2019, David said becoming a father to his son Alfred had changed his life for the better.

He said: ‘I’m definitely in a better place now and the great thing about getting older is that your whole life revolves around them and you don’t dwell on your own problems as much anymore because you don’t have time for that. ‘
