Sporting Lisbon still ‘dreams’ of reuniting with Manchester United’s star Cristiano Ronaldo but simply cannot afford the demands of his salary, manager Ruben Amorim claims.

The Portuguese attacker made it clear he wanted to leave Old Trafford this summer and has been aiming for an exit ever since, dropping Erik ten Hag’s pecking order at Manchester United.

Ronaldo, who came off the bench early last week and stormed through the tunnel in United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, has since been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea in January.

Sporting Lisbon is also being touted as a potential destination for the 37-year-old, who started his career with the Portuguese club before moving to Manchester United in 2003.

But Amorim pulled the Portuguese club out of the conversation on Wednesday, insisting Lisbon simply couldn’t afford the attacker’s wages.

“Everyone at Sporting dreams of Ronaldo’s return, but we don’t have the money for his salary,” he admitted reluctantly ahead of Sporting’s Champions League game against Tottenham.

Amorim’s side are third in their Champions League group with six points, level with Marseille in second place and one point behind leaders Spurs.

Ronaldo’s main motive behind pursuing a departure from Old Trafford this summer was to return to the Champions League, with Manchester United in the Europa League for at least one season.

Should Lisbon progress to the knockouts, a move to the Portuguese club in January could give Ronaldo the chance to increase his record 140 goals in the league, but it looks like he will have to endure a significant salary cut.
