This is the shocking moment a car thief rams a stolen car into a police officer after a high-speed chase as he is jailed for five and a half years.

David Doyle, 19, was driving a stolen car at dangerous speeds when he was spotted by PC Richard Keel riding a marked motorcycle in Camden Street, London, at around 6.30pm on May 17.

The officer then gave chase before Doyle reversed towards him at high speed several times, hitting him on the third attempt and knocking him off his bike.

Doyle then sped away, leaving PC Keel with significant injuries as members of the public helped the officer before alerting the ambulance service.

An investigation was launched the same day the stolen vehicle was located a mile away from the scene of the attack.

CCTV footage and forensic evidence helped identify Doyle as the main suspect, who was subsequently arrested on May 23.

The next day he was charged with driving offenses and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Doyle, of Brick Lane, Northolt, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison at Harrow Crown Court on November 14, having previously pleaded guilty at the same court on August 1.

PC Keel, based at the Central North Command Unit, said: “Although I am on a challenging journey to recovery, I am pleased that Doyle has been brought to justice for the attack.

“This incident reminds us of the dangers we face as we strive to keep communities and Londoners safe.

‘I would like to thank the public who helped me that day, and my colleagues who have supported me enormously during this difficult time.’

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said: “Every day, 18 of our officers are attacked in the line of duty to protect the public. Two are seriously injured every week.

“That is exactly what PC Keel did and I am pleased that we were able to bring his attacker to justice quickly.
