Police are investigating whether the human remains found in a vacant lot could belong to a 55-year-old missing man.

South Australian police say a worker clearing long grass on the block in Salisbury South, Adelaide made the gruesome discovery of decomposing remains just before 2pm on Monday.

On Tuesday, detectives returned to the patch of land on Cheviot Road, with officers focusing on a group of trees and shrubs and clearing the area with knockers and metal detectors.

McLean was last seen at his home in Andrews Farm on Aug. 18.

Earlier, on May 11, he was the victim of a horrific acid attack.

In that incident, he was doused with gasoline and hydrochloric acid before being hosed down by the police.

He suffered burns to his head, shoulder and arm as a result of the attack. There is no suggestion that the acid attack and disappearance are linked.

They say the circumstances surrounding the death are being treated as suspicious.

Detective Inspector Brett Featherby said on Monday that forensic tests are underway on the human body, with the remains too decayed to determine the victim’s age or gender.

CCTV footage from a neighboring property has also been provided to authorities.

SA Police Inspector Brett Featherby said the patch of land had not been mowed since March, with the grass more than 1.5 meters high at the time the decomposing body was found.

Nearby entrepreneur Kevin Boyle told The Advertiser, “It wasn’t really a place where you would have an accident.”

“You won’t find anyone this far from the road, in an overgrown paddock with nothing to suss out,” he said.

Mr Boyle said the land has been vacant for about 10 years and has never been properly maintained.
