Alexi Lalas, former USMNT star turned football expert, fears compatriot Jesse Marsch could soon be out of work after a rough patch at Leeds United.

The Elland Road club fell 3-2 at home to newly promoted Fulham on Sunday, extending their scoreless streak to eight games in all competitions.

While Marsch saved the club from relegation last season, he may not get twice the chance if Lalas’ hunch comes true.

“First, some context – it’s no shame to lose to Fulham, a solid and good team and most people would consider it a better team than Leeds,” Lalas said of Leeds’ latest result on his State of Union podcast.

Leeds started well and took the lead through Rodrigo in the 20th minute before Alexsandar Mitrovic, Bobby Reid and Willian turned the game upside down and gave Fulham a 3-1 lead.

Crysencio Summerville grabbed a late consolation for the hosts but it did little to appease the Leeds fans who chanted ‘what the f*****g hell was that?’ after the final whistle.

“Jesse Marsch, his job is to keep this team afloat this year,” Lalas continued. “With a team like Fulham you want to get a point.

“Now when it comes to Leeds and Jesse Marsch, yes, he is under pressure and rightly so.

“Not because he’s an American coach, but because he’s a coach in a situation where they’re trying to get someone to keep the ship steady and keep them in the league.

“I don’t know if or when they would pull the plug, but the screaming when it comes to fans has grown louder.

“This could be the last week we see Jesse Marsch. Even though Liverpool is not the old Liverpool, it is still Liverpool.’

The Whites travel to Anfield, where an injured Liverpool await after being humiliated in the Midlands after losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest last Saturday.

Forest is still last, although they are on the same points as fellow residents of the relegation zone in Leeds.

Marsch’s side last won the league against Chelsea on August 21, and that will have to change quickly if the American or his club is to survive.
