Unai Emery has been accused of leaving Villarreal ‘a little screwed up’ after dumping the LaLiga side to become Aston Villa’s new manager.
Villa paid the £5.3million clause to release Emery from his contract in Spain and now the former Arsenal boss will officially start work at Villa Park on November 1 – once he has completed a work permit.
Ahead of his tenure which officially begins with the Midlands side, his former club president Fernando Roig has been targeting Emery for putting the club ‘on the back foot’.

At a press conference, Roig said: “Unai’s contract has been terminated for his side. He has fulfilled his contract and therefore we thank him for his commitment, his professionalism and his work.
“We have had a great relationship and for that we thank him for his efforts, we understand that he is a professional and that is why he has decided to accept another offer. An option that comes to him because of his work, that is honour. We finished well, but he caught us on the wrong track in a rare season.
“We appreciate your work, but it’s true that it puts us at a disadvantage. We wish you the best, it leaves us a little screwed, but those of us who are here move on. We thank you and wish you the best.’
The 50-year-old was in charge of Villarreal for two seasons and quickly took them to their first European final – where they beat Man United on penalties in the Europa League final.

Emery also spoke at the press conference, reiterating his excitement at taking charge of the Premier League side.
He said, ‘I’ve had two and a half very good years here. I felt at home in heart and soul, but I carry the trade within me.
“Now I have another chance, just like when I came here. I thought I should see it as another sporting challenge.
“It’s a personal and professional decision. I left home at the age of 24 and opened myself up to the professional football world with all its consequences.’
Emery, 50, was in charge of Arsenal for 18 months between May 2018 and November 2019
It will be Emery’s first England management since his tenure at Arsenal between 2018 and 19.
Prior to their Saudi-led takeover, Emery was offered the management position at Newcastle United but turned it down as the club lacked a ‘clear vision’.
Concierge boss Aaron Danks will once again be in charge of Saturday’s game in Newcastle, while Emery waits for his ‘work permit formalities’ to be completed.
